Conference Hall, KLCC, 29 November: COL and UN Women today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise collaboration for the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment around the world.
COL President and CEO Prof Dr Asha Kanwar shared the importance of “Learning for Sustainable Development” and highlighted COL’s policy on gender in her opening remarks. For COL, the advancement of gender equality and women empowerment are essential to its agenda of learning for development.
Prof Kanwar believed that the partnership with UN Women would allow COL to leverage on the expertise of the international body and its extensive global network to reach out to marginalised communities throughout the world.
Similarly, UN Women stands to benefit from COL’s vast expertise in the use of ICT for education as well as its extensive network of experts within the Commonwealth.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said the partnership would reinforce the work that COL does specifically with girls and women in realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which is also in line with UN Women’s goals.
